A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Understanding of the Artwork Creation Experience by Art-Therapists

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and significance of the art creation experience by art therapists. For this purpose, Manen¡¯s methodology of hermeneutical phenomenology was utilized. The participants of this study were eight art therapists with clinical experience. They participated in a total of ten artworks once a week for three hours each time, and then held exhibitions for the artwork produced. The data was collected from April 2018 to October 2018 and included one where an interview was conducted during the work period, followed by 2 hours of artwork in a group and participants were individually interview once for 90 minutes, then on completion of the exhibition. In this respect, the 5 essential themes and 15 sub-themes were derived based on the data. The essential themes were as follows: , ,, , The conclusions of this study were that it demonstrated that the artistic process of contemplation has its own healing qualities and the identity of arts therapy. It was shown that arts therapists can be more firmly established when the value of artistic creation is integrated into the art therapy process. Broadly speaking, this conviction has also helped therapists to take an active role in clinical practice, with more confidence in arts and artwork.
